For our article on 12 Disney gift ideas and recommendations for millennials, we required flatlays of the best Disney gifts that one can find along Orchard Road. The objective was to promote these products in the most stylish and trendy ways possible. I had the creative freedom to conceptualise, shoot, edit, and write the article.
I wanted to make it relevant to today's generation, and cool enough to be a great gift. I first conceptualised a few themes for the flatlays; Brunch With The Girls, Edgy, Study Sleepover, Coffee Date, and For Her. I planned out all the props I needed for each theme. I created a few boards for myself to reference from.
During the shoot, I used a hand-held camera for a top-down view, finding it easier to move around if I needed to. I set up three lights, a tripod for a top-down shot, and a table beneath to place everything on it. I shot various versions to choose from. I shot for a 16x9 and 1x1 format, then rearranged it slightly for a 9x16 format. I started colour correcting in Lightroom and then editing it in Photoshop.
In Photoshop, I cleaned any stains, removed any creases, brightened areas, and made some of the objects or the graphics in the product more vibrant. I also added some Christmas or Disney motifs; like adding confetti and baubles, snowflakes, a part of a wreath, and a Mickey motif in the cup of coffee. I created new customised brushes as well. To fit into the different formats, I also extended the sides by means of clone stamping.
Finally, when all the deliverables were ready - 5 x (1x1), 5 x (16x9), and 5 x (9x16) - I wrote the accompanying article.
